Daniel Arnold - Odds and Ends

Brooklyn-based filmmakers Mika Altskan and Matvey Fiks follow street photographer Daniel Arnold over three days and across the five boroughs as the photographer homes in on his subjects—teenagers lifting weights in an alleyway, grandmothers gossiping on a boardwalk bench, a father who pantomimes throwing his son in a trash can—depicting the diverse, chaotic energy of the city, and Arnold’s method of capturing the moments that can slip past others in all of their humanity-revealing glory. 4. Daniel Rozin, "PomPom Mirror," 2015

Daniel Rozin,

Daniel Rozin "PomPom Mirror," 2015 928 faux fur pom poms, 464 motors, control electronics, xbox kinect motion sensor, mac-mini computer, custom Software, wooden armature 48 x 48 x 18 in / 121.9 x 121.9 x 45.7 cm Edition of 6 Rozin’s anthropomorphic "PomPom Mirror" features a synchronized array of 928 spherical faux fur puffs. Organized into a three-dimensional grid of beige and black, the sculpture is controlled by hundreds of motors that build silhouettes of viewers using computer-vision. Along its surface, figures appear as fluffy animal-like representations within the picture plane, which is made permeable by a ‘push-pull’ forward and backward motion of meshed ‘pixels’. Ghostly traces fade and emerge, as the motorized composition hums in unified movement, seemingly alive and breathing as a body of its own. Filmed and edited by Victoria Sendra.

7. Daniel Rozin, "Angles Mirror," 2013

Daniel Rozin,

Daniel Rozin "Angles Mirror," 2013 465 plastic spokes, motors, control electronics, xbox kinect motion sensor, mac-mini computer, custom software, steel armature 7.7 ft x 7 ft x 3 in / 235 x 213 x 7.6 cm Edition of 6, 1 AP The "Angles Mirror" rejects the idea of building a picture based on relative lightness and darkness. Instead, it explores a system of linear rotation that indicates the direction of an object’s contour. A wall-mounted sculpture, the "Angles Mirror" is a sharp triangular block of steel, dotted with yellow indicator arms that pivot. Based on the isometric grid, its structure favors the patterns and angles found in an equilateral triangle. The arms, which do not have the ability to change brightness or luminosity, use input from a camera and reconstruct the view with areas of varying angles. The negative space surrounding a viewer is translated into horizontal lines on the picture plane. Rather than creating a photorealistic image, the three-dimensional movement of a figure is represented, visualizing optical flow as viewer’s proximity to the sculpture changes. A nuanced contour results, as the viewer shifts back and forth, altering how the structure of space is perceived. Similar to "Fan Mirror", in the "Angles Mirror", the sequence of movement across the picture plane is directed in part by its audience. When the viewer walks away from the work, or chooses to view the sculpture from a distance, a series of predefined images and transitions cover the object’s surface. 11. Daniel Rozin, "Penguins Mirror," 2015

Daniel Rozin,

Daniel Rozin "Penguins Mirror", 2015 450 stuffed animals, motors, control electronics, xbox kinect motion sensor, mac-mini computer, custom software, tin bases Dimensions variable "Penguins Mirror" is an installation scattered on the floor and comprised of 450 motorized stuffed animals. Reductive in palette, yet baroque in behavior, it performs an absurdly homogeneous system of movement. Playing with the compositional possibilities of black and white, each penguin turns from side to side and responds to the presence of an audience. As they perform, the penguins’ collective intelligence is puzzling, yet somehow familiar, as the plush toys enact a precise choreography rooted in geometry. Filmed and edited by Victoria Sendra.

We were completely stoked when Primavera Sound commissioned us to take on one of their “My Favourite Music Memory” episodes, where artists narrate their recalls and nostalgia on their treasured music moments. Hi How Are You Daniel Johnston?

Iconic musician/artist Daniel Johnston stars in this psychedelic short film about an aging artist coming to terms with the dreams of yesteryear. Step inside Daniel's mind as he revisits life in 1983 amidst the creation of his seminal album "Hi, How Are You". Reality and fiction blend as Daniel reveals bitter-sweet truths, tales of unrequited love and advice for artists everywhere. An original score of orchestral Daniel Johnston songs features a cover of "Some Things Last A Long Time" performed by Lana Del Rey. Appearing in the film is musician/actress Soko as Daniel’s long-lost love, Laurie. The film includes original animation based on Daniel’s iconic character, Jeremiah, animated and voiced by The Brothers McLeod. For more info visit

15. Jack Daniel's meets The Signpainter

Jack Daniel's meets The Signpainter

In what is quickly becoming an annual tradition, we worked with independent artists in Berkeley, CA; Austin, TX; and Brooklyn, NY, to create five posters centered around the theme of Independence. Here, Derek McDonald uses classic sign painting - on wood and on the door of a vintage, 1950 pickup truck - to create the art for the Jack Daniel's Independence Day campaign. The door was later removed from the truck and, along with the signboard, photographed to create the artwork for print ads, posters and large-scale outdoor murals. The signboard poster reads: "THERE'S THE EASY WAY, THERE'S THE FAST WAY AND THEN THERE'S THE BEST WAY." The truck door reads: "MADE IN AMERICA. BECAUSE THAT'S HOW AMERICA WAS MADE."
